Research has long been guarded by the financial and technological inaccessibility of laboratory equipment, and exclusive academic mechanisms of selection. These constraints have excluded many undergraduates from participating in research conducted at their universities. But the rise of computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, and open source collaboration is changing this landscape. Advances in frontiers of understanding are no longer the domain of graduate academia.
